Surveillance of Hospital Acquired Infections (HAI) is a system designed to monitor HAIs within a hospital, with the primary aim of reducing the HAI risk within hospitals. The cycle of HAI surveillance includes the stages of ‘data collection— data analysis—data interpretation—data dissemination’. The main purpose of HAI (Hospital-Acquired Infection) surveillance is to determine the baseline infection or endemic infection rates and understand the types of infections occurring in the hospital and healthcare. It also helps in comparing infection rates across different wards, ICUs, OT, units, or even with other healthcare facilities to identify variations. Through this process, problem areas can be detected, and a root cause analysis can be conducted to identify gaps in infection control practices.
